I suspect you are largely correct, and have put your finger on why Oz politics is such a grotesque pantomime long emptied of any significance to speak of. But this is, may one suggest, putting the cart before the horse.
Because people (broadly speaking) decide to pay their subscription to one or other of these idiotic boxes, they have thereby disqualified themselves from making much of a worthwhile contribution to what might possibly constitute an actual debate. We constantly see bewildered pollies half-aware that they appear to have signed up to something even more bizarre than usual. And then comes the Shrug. Yeah, OK. It doesn't make any sense but apparently it's what we do.
I ought to have been more precise. A 3-D continuum is what people's politics OUGHT to look like. That way they might have some vestige of a clue why they favour some things and not others. What you are telling me is yeah, maybe: but they actually don't.
A depressing thought, but I cannot fault your observation. All we can hope is that a few more folks will escape the epistemological prison-house.
