Now call me Mr Suspicious if you like.....

... but I don't think there is a good reason to ring doorbells, softly and tentatively, at 1am. Really not. So, having been informed of this by Mme, I sallied forth, with my old hockey stick, to investigate. Saying quite loudly: "If you are outside my house you'll be very sorry. Because I have a pointy halberd inside and it may not be your night."
The REALLY touching bit? Mr Dougal came with me. I am informed that we both strode out the front door in similar vein. As if he were telling me OK if it's a cat I'll get him and if it's a human you do him over. He is such a good cat. My little baby boy has had to grow up fast, what with having to protect his girl-cats from invading toms, but he is coping. The fact that he is already a Giant Kitten (cf the Goodies) does help, of course. Every other tom-cat in the neighbourhood has faced him and folded. Because most cats are sensible and know when it's not worth it. Not Jasper, until last week, when Dougal saw him off on Thursday with maximum prejudice. A couple of times he has been chased into the house, where he has hidden under the bed for a moment or two before re-emerging to wipe the floor with the invader.
For the record, there was nobody there by the time we emerged. But Ms Shadow washed his face, as she does every time he does something brave. Today, by way of a truly royal Thank You, Mme feasted me on Veuve Clicquot and pepper steak. And the cats, including the dauntless Dougal, got some of the latter.

Oh Dear
