They are definitely teenagers, but Mlle Shadow is mostly calm except during bed-making, where she feels obliged to help me by racing madly around the sheets, grabbing the pillow-cases and insisting on being made into the bed. And Dougal is one of those awesomely calm teenagers who are six and a half feet tall and four axe-handles across because they can afford to be.

The only time he gets worked up is when Shadow gets attacked by Jasper (qv - the Idiot Invader). Dougal jumps on him, bites or clobbers him, chases him away and then goes and has very quiet hysterics under the bed. He is one of those SNAG warriors who gets really upset by having to thump people.

Actually, his interactions with Ms Smudge/Belladonna are intriguing. Her initial fury at having kittens in HER house has given way to a mature reflection that they can be quiet useful really. Once when a tom-cat came calling instead of her usual hysterics she simply waved a paw at him, as if to say: "Deal with it, will you, Sir Thud?" So Dougal saw off the intruder, and came back for approval. She waved her paw in acknowledgement again; whereupon, honour satisfied, he sat down for a quick wash.
